Zachariah Spellman has been Principal Tuba of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra since 1977 and of the Marin Symphony since 1980. Zachariah came from Portland to San Francisco in 1975 to attend the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

 

Musical training in public school and youth orchestra helped prepare Zachariah for the expectations that face freelance musicians. Beginning with the Golden Gate Park Band and Bay Area Brass Quintet, freelancing soon followed with ensembles such as Arch Street Ensemble, Golden Gate Brass Quintet, San Francisco Tuba Quartet, Auiro Trio and the Green Street Mortuary Band.

 

Casuals in the Bay Area and many musical configurations with the San Francisco Symphony’s Adventures in Music took Mr. Spellman to schools for educational programs. Zachariah performs and records under the Digital Victoria label with longtime collaborator Karen Hutchinson and the Jeff Sanford Jazz Orchestra.
